Let’s Connect Feature: Educated Angels

Educated Angels is a group of community partners who desire to give back to children and young adults in our Central Texas area.  We strive to help those in need, those with a disability and those who want to improve not only themselves, but to contribute to our community in a positive way.

The nonprofit was born out of our business, My Tutor and More’s, desire to give scholarships to students wanting to become educators, through our desire to help the more than 1500 homeless students in KISD and lastly, to give back to the disabled community partially in the name of C Zachary Sheppard, in his untimely death.  One of our goals is to team up with other organizations and businesses to better our community through outreach, projects and community events.

We are in our 7th year of our summer internship program, Make It Work, for students that want to become educators.  These students, after successfully completing the program, receive a scholarship to the school of their choice.  In addition, Educated Angels has partnered with KZFrazier Drama Company, Lily’s Cakes, Central Texas College and, most recently, Vista College to award additional scholarships in other field choices.

In an effort to reach out and assist with the more than 1500 homeless students, we have sponsored an annual Back to School Bash since 2013 in which we collect school supplies and backpacks. Our effort is very different from many other organizations and businesses that have back to school events and give supplies away.  Instead, we hand over the bus loads of items directly to KISD HARP for them to distribute to those students who are truly in need.

HARP is a federally mandated program requiring families to meet certain criteria.  The students also benefit from prom dresses with all the trimmings.  Coach Henderson Sports Photography partners with LULAC Herencia Council #4297 to organize senior photo shoots all donated through our organization.  And, this year the local business, Blessed Properties, and the organization, Helping the Hands that Feed the Homeless, teamed up to provide college/life baskets for 58 seniors.

Our support for the special needs community of KISD is done through catering the Special Olympics End of Season Banquet in the same style and fashion of the varsity athletes throughout the district.  We also work as servers for this event.  We sponsor the Harker Heights Super Hero Program in the name of C Zachary Sheppard with a donation to one of the sports.  KISD Bowling Clubs also receive scholarships through this portion of our outreach.  Lastly, we have awarded a scholarship through KISD Education Foundation.

Educated Angels has partnered with many local business and organizations to include, but not limited to:  Ohana Ink, Ambiance Limousine, Coach Henderson Sports Photography, APEX Media, K-Lynn Photography, LULAC Herencia Council #4297, Central Texas College, KZFrazier Drama Company, Teach Them to Love (T3L), Blessed Properties, Helping the Hands that Feed the Homeless, Lily’s Cakes and Vista College.

It is truly the desire of Educated Angels to support and bring our community together in the name and interest of children and those with special needs.  Our board members work tirelessly to make our events, activities and programs successful.  Our board members are:  Tina Capito (President & Founder), Doni Engel (VP), Mark Sheppard (VP & Founder), Sibyl Sheppard (Secretary & Founder), Keeta Key (Treasurer), Jesse Henderson, Hayward Riley, Wayne Moore, Amber Riley, Michael Robinson, Martin Spears, Teri Spears, Renee Sharper, Amber Diaz, Mercedes Chatman-Hoffman, Natalie Cue, Minerva Cotton & Camayla Nichols.
